This painting is part of my Fresh Finds project—I'm going through my studio and releasing older works that haven't been shown or listed before. I painted this one back in 2014 after a trip to Los Angeles. I had walked across a famous bridge that later showed up in the movie La La Land. After seeing it on screen, I paused the film, did a quick sketch, and used that as the starting point for this painting.
The style is very much in the Bay Area Figurative tradition. It’s a small canvas—12 by 16 inches—but the brushwork is intentionally large and expressive. I premixed oil paints on my glass palette, started with an underpainting, and then came back with bristle brushes to layer in thicker strokes. You can see how the direction of the brushwork follows the forms, like in the lapel of the man’s jacket or the curve of the woman’s hair.
I was also focused on creating variety across the surface—the road and railing have one kind of texture, the foliage and sky have another. It’s meant to feel spontaneous but still structured.
This piece hasn’t been shown publicly before, and I’m excited to include it in the Fresh Finds archive release.
