1994, Directions, 8x10 inches, watercolor on paper, by Kenney Mencher
This watercolor is called "Directions," and it’s from 1994—my last year of grad school. It was one of those loose sheets floating around in my flat files until a gallery director from Hang Gallery in San Francisco suggested I start offering some of my drawings and watercolors to collectors. She had the idea to go through my old sketchbooks and pull a few to show the process behind my oil paintings.

This piece was one of those early experiments where I was finding my voice. I used to create a little “holding line” or boundary around the area I wanted to work in—kind of like framing the image before I even started. You could frame it with or without a mat. Matting it tight would give it a clean, cropped feel, or you could let the edges show to highlight the original working space.

It’s 8x10 inches, watercolor on paper, and part of my Fresh Finds project, where I’m pulling archival works out of storage and putting them back out into the world.
