This painting is called "Benefits Office," and I painted it in 1994 while I was deep into my graduate studies. It's 11x14 inches, oil on wood, and it comes framed. The frame is a found one—something I picked up that already had a nice aged look, so I used it as-is.
At the time, I was experimenting with more narrative and psychological content in my work, focusing on figures in waiting rooms, lobbies, and everyday institutional spaces. The goal was to capture quiet tension and ambiguity, kind of in the spirit of Bay Area Figurative artists like Elmer Bischoff, but also filtered through everyday 1990s settings.
This painting is part of my Fresh Finds project—a series of older works I’m pulling out of storage, many of which haven’t been shown or made available in nearly 30 years.
