When I first painted Two Amorous Bears, I wanted to capture a quiet, affectionate moment between two older men — something strong, tender, and unguarded. The original was painted alla prima (wet-into-wet) in a single session, with thick, direct brushwork that emphasized the weight and warmth of the figures. This reproduction translates that sense of immediacy beautifully onto heavy, premium matte paper, where you can still see the gesture of the brush and the softness of the blended edges.
I built the composition from imagination rather than live models, letting the forms emerge through memory and intuition. The result feels more universal than portrait-specific — a distilled image of connection. The palette is warm: burnt siennas, umbers, and delicate pinks, balanced by pale grays in the background. Even in reproduction, the matte surface preserves the subtle variations of flesh tone and the rhythm of the paint marks.
