This is a handmade, original work of art NOT A PRINT and NOT AI GENERATED
FREE SHIPPING Shipping takes 3–4 Weeks This ships from San Carlos, California (The San Francisco Bay Area). I use UPS and sometimes US Post.
My self portraits are partly a way of figuring out how to make better paintings. I’m studying my own anatomy, but I’m also looking at what a line can do. How much information do I need? What can a few hatch marks or a contour tell me that a smoothly shaded passage doesn’t?
In this drawing, the face has more concentrated shading, while the shoulder and chest are described with looser lines. The glasses stay on. They are one of the choices I’m exploring in these self portraits, along with how much to finish and what to leave open. I’m interested in carrying some of this drawing vocabulary into my paintings rather than covering every mark.
This is a small study connected to “Thursday 8:22 AM,” and it also stands on its own as a finished drawing. Looking closely at myself is part of the larger exploration behind my Self Directed series.
Some of the photographs show the drawing against black felt so you can see the deckled edges and how the composition sits on the sheet. The felt is a photographic backdrop, not part of the artwork.
