“Thursday 8:22 AM” 22 × 16 inches, Crayon on paper
This is a handmade, original work of art NOT A PRINT and NOT AI GENERATED
FREE SHIPPING Shipping takes 3–4 Weeks This ships from San Carlos, California (The San Francisco Bay Area). I use UPS and sometimes US Post.
Although the figure is me, I use self-portraiture as a way to think about experiences that other middle-aged and older men might recognize. My body and the rooms I occupy become a way of exploring vulnerability, routines, and identity. Here, the empty chair and the shoes suggest presence, absence, and self-observation.
The room takes up a substantial part of the drawing. I'm seated on the edge of the bed, with the chair beside me and the shoes close to the bottom edge. The curved lines of the chair sit against the repeated verticals of the radiator and window. Those ordinary objects have as much to say about the scene as my face does.
This is also part of the practical work of studying my own figure for my Self Directed series. I'm interested in how contour lines, hatch marks, and broader areas of shading can work together. The marks remain visible across the body, bedclothes, and floor, rather than disappearing into smooth shading.
Some of the photographs show the drawing against black felt so you can see the edges of the paper and how the composition fills the sheet. The felt is only a photographic backdrop, not part of the artwork.
