This drawing is a study for “Sunday 12:25 AM (Kitchen),” part of my Self Directed series. I place my aging body within the ordinary ritual of eating alone late at night. The kitchen gives me a way to think about solitude and the passage of time through familiar things: a table, empty chairs, a takeout carton, and a dark window.

The room takes up much more space than I do. A large empty chair fills the foreground, and the table stretches between the viewer and my seated figure. The curved chair backs and rounded table corners contrast with the straight lines of the window, wall panels, and tiled floor. Those repeated shapes help hold the room together while the empty seats make the space around me important.

Working in crayon on toned Rives BFK lets me build the scene with both lines and blocks of shading. The marks stay visible across the table and through the shadows. Light touches pick out the furniture's edges, and the dark window provides a strong contrast to the lit interior. The paper's surface is part of the drawing rather than something I try to hide.

In the painting, I developed this scene through intense artificial color. Here, I'm working through its structure in a more limited range of light and dark. This study has its own rhythm of hatching, contours, and broad shading, while also helping me work out the larger painting.
