This is Sisyphus, an original watercolor on paper, 11x14 inches, painted in 2025. I’ve been on a classics kick lately, teaching Homer, Virgil, and Greek myth in my humanities course, and this piece draws directly from that. The figure of Sisyphus pushing his boulder is a symbol I’ve always found fascinating—endless struggle, resilience, and endurance.

I chose to paint him nude, with a crown of leaves, echoing both classical art and queer interpretations of myth. The watercolor medium lets me play with light and shadow quickly, and here I used layered washes. The body is rendered with strength and immediacy, while the rocky surface is dense and weighty.

To me, this connects with gay culture today. Sisyphus is a powerful metaphor for pushing forward even when society tries to push us back. In a time when queer art is censored or attacked, owning and showing work like this becomes an act of resistance and solidarity. It’s about claiming space—just like Sisyphus claims his struggle with dignity and persistence.

As an artist, I’ve always tried to tie my teaching, my love of classical literature, and my practice together. This piece is both a mythological painting and a personal statement about resilience and visibility.
