This study explores the same imagined encounter through a different approach to light and mark making. I’m seated beside my boots, with a larger muscular man seen from behind in the foreground. It belongs with the companion pieces I’m developing, although I’m still asking what companionship means in this particular image. Is he another person, a specter, or an imagined version of myself? I haven’t decided.

The ordinary business of getting dressed carries some very personal history. I began having trouble with bunions in my late forties, and there were mornings when putting on shoes was difficult. Surgery helped enormously. I still walk a great deal, but my feet, their scars, and the shoes I now choose bring together gratitude and a little sadness. Those details are part of how I’m trying to portray myself.

Here, the warm tone of the paper runs through the bodies and the room. White strokes cross the broad back and shoulder, catch the seated figure’s face and arms, and pick out the window, bedding, and boots. The darker crayon establishes edges and blocks of shadow. I like the way the individual marks remain visible while also building the bodies and the space around them.

The large cropped figure at the left and the smaller seated figure at the right give me two very different bodily presences to work with. This is part of the planning for a painting rather than a settled explanation of it. I later narrowed the subject down to my feet and boots in a separate drawing, but here I’m still working with the larger scene and its unanswered questions.
