This is one of the studies I made while thinking about a larger painting. I’m exploring who I am through the symbols I choose and the techniques I use to describe them. Here, I’m seated with my bare feet beside my boots, while a much larger, muscular figure occupies the foreground.

My feet are an important part of the story. Bunions made getting up and putting on shoes painful. Surgery was life changing, and I still walk five to ten miles a day, but I have mixed feelings when I look at my feet and the scars. There’s gratitude that the surgery worked, along with some sadness about how they look. Even the choice of a sensible pair of shoes says something about the person I am now.

I’m less certain about the other man. He might be a companion, a specter, or the man I could be. This connects with my companion pieces, but I haven’t settled on a single explanation for his presence.

The drawing leaves plenty of the paper open. The broad, lightly shaded back in the foreground contrasts with the darker clothing and more concentrated marks of the seated figure. The cropped body at the left brings him very close, while the window and the space between the figures keep the room open. Contour lines establish the bodies without describing every surface. The boots sit between them near the bottom of the drawing. After exploring this larger arrangement, I made a separate drawing focused just on my feet and boots.
