Teaching has been a bittersweet enterprise for me. I absolutely love learning, interacting with students, and learning from them. But, a little like a romantic relationship, my hopes and expectations sometimes exceed the actual experience. This drawing is part of my “Self Directed” series and my way of looking at that mixture of affection, hope, and disappointment.

I think of term papers as a kind of letter. They can be someone phoning it in, or a passionate account of experience, exploration, and affection. I read Christopher Isherwood’s “A Single Man” after I had conceived of these drawings and paintings. It wasn’t their starting point. Like the kind of paper I hope to read, the novel exceeded my expectations and connected me to an experience I think many teachers and professors share.

The composition is part of how I describe my experience of the academic world. I take up only about a quarter of the space, maybe less. Here I’m tucked into the lower right, reading with my head resting against my hand. The tall doorway, windows, and walls occupy much more of the drawing than I do. The books, laptop, and papers gather around me, but the room has a presence of its own.

I’m also experimenting with different kinds of marks. Short, abrupt strokes sit alongside longer curves, and grainy areas of crayon shading meet passages I’ve left light and open. The straight lines of the architecture play against the folds of my shirt and the curves of my body. In a drawing about reading and teaching, those marks and lines are a kind of writing too.
