I guess coffee is really important in my life. I think about its history, the history of coffee houses, cantatas, and even the conspiracy theories that turn up in my social media feed. I'm curious about the stories people attach to something as ordinary as a cup of coffee. That doesn't mean I believe every theory I come across.

Coffee is a kind of time and a pause for thought. It's a moment of recollection and collecting myself. The smell and taste bring me back to my senses, my surroundings, and whatever is going through my head. Watches and time come up often in my self-portraits and earlier paintings. Here, the watch sits beside the hand holding my cup. Time and coffee are right there together.

The kitchen is full of familiar things: cabinets, dishes, the stove, and the coffee maker. The straight lines of the room surround the curves of my head, arm, and hand. The dark shirt gives the figure weight, while the lighter passages leave the individual crayon marks easy to see. Hatching describes the face and forearm, and broader areas of shading give the cup and clothing their form.

Like the other self-portraits in my Self Directed series, this drawing is also a place to study my own figure and experiment with marks I might carry into a painting. An ordinary morning gives me plenty to look at and think about.
