I'm using these small head studies to get a better understanding of what I actually look like. Photos get some of it, but I've also been working with awkwardly placed mirrors and trying to study my head from life. Each angle gives me something different to work out for the larger paintings in my Self Directed series.

This three-quarter rear view puts most of my face out of sight. The shape of my head, the ear, and the turn of my neck have to do a lot of the work. The light head stands against a dark background, with gray and white strokes alongside warmer brown passages. I'm interested in how much I can describe within a fairly monochromatic palette without smoothing everything out.

Across these studies I've been experimenting with imprimatura and the wipe-out method, asking how much to cover and how much to leave alone. They're a place to study anatomy, but also to try out different ways of making a painting. Getting a likeness isn't only about the familiar features on the front of my face.

The studio photograph shows this painting at the lower right alongside other head studies. This listing is for the single 12 × 12-inch painting only; the other works are not included.
