FREE SHIPPING Shipping takes 3–4 Weeks This ships from San Carlos, California (The San Francisco Bay Area). I use UPS and sometimes US Post.
Much of my Self Directed series uses self-portraiture as a way to explore who I am. I think about Rembrandt and Van Gogh returning to their own faces, experimenting with technique and the ways they presented themselves. For me, the exploration is often allegorical or metaphorical. The larger series deals with aging, queerness, sexuality, and even economics, especially from my position as a middle-class retired man.
This drawing takes a less familiar view of a self-portrait: the back of my head as I look upward. Without the face, the rounded skull, ears, hair, and folds of the neck carry the image. Diagonal strokes move across the crown, while darker, shorter marks describe the hair below it. The changes in pressure and direction give me different ways to describe the form without smoothing away all the individual marks.
These drawings are also studies that help me understand my own anatomy and make better paintings. I'm experimenting with line quality, hatching, and contour, including marks I might leave visible in a painting. Looking at myself from another angle gives me another piece of the larger project of understanding and portraying my aging body.
I photographed the drawing against black felt to show the deckled edges of the Rives BFK paper and how the composition sits on the sheet. The black felt is only a photographic backdrop and is not part of the artwork.
