I'm using these head studies to get a better understanding of my own anatomy and to make more accurate self portraits for my Self Directed projects. I've been taking selfies and setting up some awkwardly placed mirrors to work from life. This time I'm looking at the back of my head, studying the shape of the skull, the ears, and the way the hair meets the neck.

This one has a few passages of impasto, where the paint is thicker. I also used the back end of my brush and a pencil to etch some of the hairs into the paint. Those small incised lines sit alongside broader brushstrokes. I like having different kinds of marks available to describe the same head.

The pale crown and the darker band of hair give me a lot to work with in a fairly monochromatic palette. The brushwork stays visible, and the little lines in the hair and along the neck contrast with the broader areas of light and shade. These studies are a place to experiment with how much information a mark can carry while I'm also trying to understand what I actually look like.

The studio photographs show this painting alongside other works. This listing is for the single 12 × 12 inch painting shown in the first image; the other artworks are not included.
