Self Portrait (Head Study Profile Looking Left and Up), 12x12 inches, oil on canvas panel, by Kenney Mencher
“Self Portrait (Head Study Profile Looking Left and Up)” 12 × 12 inches, Oil on canvas panel
This is a handmade, original work of art NOT A PRINT and NOT AI GENERATED
FREE SHIPPING Shipping takes 3–4 Weeks This ships from San Carlos, California (The San Francisco Bay Area). I use UPS and sometimes US Post.
In this more complex profile, I was experimenting with tonality and color within a fairly monochromatic palette. My head tilts up and to the left, bringing the underside of the jaw and the length of the neck into view. The warm orange-brown tones run through both the head and the background. Darker passages around the eye, beneath the cheekbone, and under the chin help describe the structure, while the lighter areas pick out the forehead, nose, cheek, and ear.
I’m interested in how much I can describe with these shifts in tone. A dark contour follows the top of the head, but elsewhere the form develops through broader patches of light and dark. The brush marks and canvas texture remain visible. There’s room for both the drawn edge and the more gradual changes of shading.
These head studies help me understand my own anatomy as I prepare for my Self Directed projects. I’ve been using selfies alongside awkwardly placed mirrors to study myself from life. Across the series, I’m experimenting with monochrome, imprimatura, and the wipe-out method, asking how much to cover and how much to leave exposed. Working on this small scale gives me a place to try things out and study the forms I want to use in larger paintings.
This listing is for the single painting shown in the first image. The other paintings, drawings, and studio equipment visible in the studio photographs are not included.
