I'm using these head studies to get better acquainted with my own face. Photos get some of it, but they don't tell me everything. For this group of paintings, I took selfies and arranged mirrors at some pretty awkward angles so I could also work from life. Each study helps me understand the anatomy and the shapes I need for the larger paintings in my Self Directed series.

Here, the profile fills most of the square. The pale head stands out against a dark background, and the shadow beneath the jaw connects with the darker passages of the neck. Short, visible strokes describe the hair, while broader patches of gray build the cheek and forehead. I like being able to see both the structure of the head and the marks that describe it.

These paintings are also experiments with monochrome, imprimatura, and the wipe-out method. How much should I cover? How much can I leave alone? Working with a limited range of tones gives me a way to think about those questions without having to solve everything at once. This is a study for future work, but it's also a painting in its own right. Looking closely at myself is part of learning how to paint myself more accurately.

This listing is for the single painting shown in the first image. The other paintings and drawings visible in the studio photographs are not included.
