I have loved profile portraits since I was a little kid. For me, the profile is almost the easiest angle from which to draw a face. When I was eight or nine, my elementary school library had a book of Hans Christian Andersen’s stories with a simple line drawing of his profile on the back cover. I copied it over and over. Eventually I knew it so well that I would take a stick and draw it in the moist soil of the schoolyard during recess.

Now I’m studying my own profile. The light gray and white brushstrokes build the forehead, cheek, ear, and neck against a dark brown background. The individual marks remain visible. There’s an orange-brown passage at the shoulder, and the canvas texture shows through the thinner areas of paint. The outline gives me one way to understand the head, while the blocks of light and dark help me work out its structure.

These head studies are part of the preparation for my Self Directed projects. I’ve been using selfies and awkwardly placed mirrors to work from life, trying to understand how I actually look. Across the series, I’m experimenting with monochrome, imprimatura, and the wipe-out method, including how much to cover and how much to leave exposed. These small paintings give me room to study anatomy and experiment with the marks I might carry into larger work.

This listing is for the single painting shown in the first image. Another study is partly visible at the bottom of the second photograph and is not included.
