Self Portrait (Head Study Looking Right and Down), 12x12 inches, oil on canvas panel, by Kenney Mencher
“Self Portrait (Head Study Looking Right and Down)” 12 × 12 inches, Oil on canvas panel
This is a handmade, original work of art NOT A PRINT and NOT AI GENERATED
FREE SHIPPING Shipping takes 3–4 Weeks This ships from San Carlos, California (The San Francisco Bay Area). I use UPS and sometimes US Post.
I'm not sure how I really look. Photos kind of get it, but I wanted more than one way of studying my own head. I took a series of selfies and set up some awkwardly placed mirrors so I could also work from life. These studies help me make more accurate self portraits for my Self Directed projects.
This painting is part of my experiments with monochrome and earth-tone monochrome, imprimatura, and the wipe-out method. How much of the canvas is okay to leave as white gesso? How much should I cover? I'm working through those questions across these head studies while figuring out how to describe the structure of my face.
Here, my head turns to the right and tilts down. Broad gray and brown passages describe the side of the head, while lighter strokes pick out the forehead, brow, cheek, and nose. Against the dark background, the changes in direction and value do much of the work. You can still see the individual brush marks and the different ways I build the forms.
Looking at my head from another angle gives me a chance to check what I think I know about it. I'm studying anatomy and experimenting with paint at the same time, trying to understand what information I need for my Self Directed self portraits.
This listing is for the single painting shown in the first image. The studio photographs also show other studies, which are not included.
