This is an original work not a print or a copy.

When I worked on Profile View, Leaping Nude, I was trying to explore how watercolor could capture both movement and dignity in an older male figure. I wanted the painting to feel like a classical or Baroque figure study—something you might see in an artist’s sketchbook from centuries ago, but with a subject we rarely see represented today: a strong, silver-haired man.

I was attempting to work in a way that recalls artists like John Singer Sargent, especially his watercolor studies where simple shapes and washes suggest form, rather than outline it. The challenge was to build structure through transparent layers—using warm earth tones for skin and cool neutrals for shadow—without losing the energy of the pose.

I was also trying to balance precision and looseness, keeping the marks visible so that the process of painting remains part of the image. The Rives BFK paper’s texture helped hold the washes and gave a soft edge to the transitions, which makes the figure feel alive and immediate.

Each painting I make like this is shipped carefully packed, insured, and ready to frame.
