I’m exploring how to portray who I am through the things I choose to draw and the ways I draw them. In this case, it comes down to something pretty ordinary and very personal: my feet and my boots.

Boy, my feet sure do hurt sometimes. I began having trouble with bunions in my late forties. There were mornings when getting up and putting my shoes on was difficult. Surgery was life changing, although I’ve had to make more sensible choices about what I wear on my feet. I still walk five to ten miles a day. When I look at my shoes and the scars from surgery, I have mixed feelings. I’m grateful that it worked, but there’s also a little sadness about how my feet look.

This drawing grew out of studies for a larger painting I’m considering. In the other sketches, I included a larger, muscular figure. I’m not sure whether he is a companion, a specter, or an image of the man I could be. I want to leave that question open. Here, I narrowed my attention to the most elemental part of the idea: the feet and the boots.

The black and white crayon lets me move between strong outlines, rough blocks of shading, and quick, smaller marks. White lines pick out the laces, the edges of the boots, and the structure of the feet. The toned paper holds those lights and darks together. Cropping the legs brings the attention down to this small, familiar part of my body and the things I put on it every day. It’s a study for something larger, but it also gives this subject room to stand on its own.
