This is my painting Laocoön, an original oil on canvas panel, 12x16 inches, painted in 2025. I made it while teaching a humanities core course on the ancient world. I was thinking a lot about classical texts like the Aeneid, the Iliad, and the Odyssey, and of course the famous Laocoön Group sculpture in Rome. That classical inspiration really shaped both the theme and the structure of this piece.

The composition is intentionally serpentine—twisting and dynamic—something I borrowed from the Hellenistic sculptors. But it’s also unusual and contemporary in its cropping and presentation. I wanted the body to feel monumental, echoing the drama of ancient art while staying rooted in my ongoing figurative work.

For me, works like this also connect to gay culture today. Queer representation in art is under attack in many places, but classical art reminds us that the human body, in all its strength and vulnerability, has always been central to culture. To own a piece like this is not only to celebrate the continuity of art history, but also to stand in solidarity with queer visibility now. Collecting and showing this kind of work is a statement of resistance and social change.

As an artist, I’ve always tried to connect my practice to history while also responding to the present moment. This painting ties my lifelong love of classical studies to my role as a teacher and artist working in a time when visibility still matters.
