I painted "Greek Tragedy" in 1994 during my last year of graduate school at the University of Cincinnati. That time was rough—politically and personally. The local art scene was still reeling from the fallout over the Robert Mapplethorpe controversy at the Contemporary Arts Center. On top of that, my advisors were hard on me for the subject matter I was working with. A lot of it was subtle censorship, some of it not so subtle. This piece came out of that frustration.
The painting is oil on stretched canvas, 10x10 inches, unframed. The brushwork is loose and aggressive, built up quickly in a direct, alla prima style. It’s part of a series of small nudes I was doing at the time—intense, cropped, and expressive.
This painting is based quite a bit on my love of the Bay Area Figurative group. Artists like Elmer Bischoff and Richard Diebenkorn were major influences for me back then, and you can see some of that influence in the palette and painterly treatment of the figure.
This piece is unframed and signed. It’s part of a batch of early works I’ve pulled from storage and made available to collectors. If you already follow my work, this is a good example of where I started. If you're new to it, this is a handmade, direct painting with a real story behind it.
