This print is from my painting The Rosy Riveter. It’s a piece about contrasts—clothing and nudity, structure and looseness, tension and ease. On the left, a figure in a white shirt and tie rolls up his sleeves, his pose confident and controlled. On the right, another figure stands with his back to us, his tank top hiked up casually to reveal his bare body. The juxtaposition of the two figures creates a dialogue: formality meets sensuality, work meets play.
I used bristle brushes with visible, directional strokes so that the paint itself feels alive. The shirt and tie are painted with blocky, quick marks that still suggest crisp fabric, while the exposed skin is modeled more carefully with warmer tones and smoother transitions. The background is a patchwork of whites and creams, built up with thick strokes, giving the whole composition a tactile surface that pushes against the figures.
This painting nods to both art history and popular culture. There’s a hint of chiaroscuro in the way the shadows define muscles and folds of fabric, but it’s filtered through modern figurative traditions—something closer to Diebenkorn or Bischoff in the brushwork. At the same time, the subject matter connects to the cinematic: it could be a film still, a scene unfolding between two characters, or even a reworking of classic pin-up traditions.
For me, The Rosy Riveter is about playfulness as much as beauty. It takes the energy of labor and work (a rolled-up shirt sleeve, a tank top twisted up) and flips it into something intimate and teasing.
Please note: this is a print, not an original. The prints are high-quality reproductions, but like any print, they don’t fully capture the depth and texture of the original painting. The larger the size, the more visible the brushwork and canvas texture will appear.
