This print is from my painting Performance. I wanted this piece to focus on the torso and the drama of light across the body. The figure is cropped—head and legs out of frame—so the attention goes straight to the abdominal muscles, chest, and the way the underwear frames the form. The pose, with arms lifted, stretches the ribcage and makes every muscle visible, while the painted surface stays alive with bold brushstrokes.

The background is a field of reds and oranges, painted with a palette knife and bristle brushes in broad, textured marks. This warmth makes the flesh tones stand out while also giving the piece a theatrical feel. I like how the layers of red can suggest stage lights, a wall, or just pure abstract energy behind the body.

I was thinking about both classical figure studies and modern figuration when I made this. The strong modeling of light and shadow recalls Baroque painting—Caravaggio’s chiaroscuro—while the raw, visible brushwork nods to 20th-century figurative painters like Bischoff and Diebenkorn. There’s also a sense of photography and film in the cropping, as if this were a still frame from a cinematic moment.

For me, Performance is about presence and strength, but also about how we look at the male body in contemporary culture. It could read as sensual, dramatic, or even ironic depending on the viewer’s perspective, but the central thing is the paint itself—the marks of the brush that both describe and celebrate the form.

Please note: this is a print, not an original. The prints are high-quality reproductions, but like any print, they don’t fully capture the depth and texture of the original painting. The larger the size, the more visible the brushwork and canvas texture will appear.
