This print is from my painting Northern Bear, a portrait that celebrates strength, body, and presence. The figure is posed from a slightly low angle, which makes him feel even larger and more commanding. I wanted to capture the warmth and power of his body while also letting the brushwork remain visible and raw. The strokes move across the surface in big sweeps, echoing the contours of the torso and beard, while the background shifts between cool blue-grays and aqua tones, setting off the earthy skin tones.
The anatomy here is naturalistic, but not idealized—I leaned into the texture of the skin, the curves of the stomach, and the mass of the body, painting with honesty but also admiration. It’s about presence as much as form. The contrast between the lighter highlights and darker shadows draws on chiaroscuro traditions that go back to painters like Caravaggio, while the visible brushstrokes connect more with modern expressionistic approaches.
For me, this painting was about representing a body type that isn’t always seen in fine art but deserves the same monumental treatment as a classical figure. The energy of the brushwork, the scale of the pose, and the direct gaze all work together to give the piece a sense of dignity and confidence.
