This print comes from my painting Muscular Powerhouse, a portrait of a male figure that’s all about strength, presence, and brushwork. I painted the torso frontally, pushing the anatomy forward so the chest, shoulders, and abs dominate the composition. The background is rough and textured, painted in warm browns that make the flesh tones pop even more.
The brushwork here is broad and deliberate—I used bristle brushes so that every stroke follows the form of the muscles, almost like carving the figure out of paint. The face is slightly stylized, simplified into bold planes, while the torso is more naturalistic, lit dramatically with chiaroscuro to emphasize volume and solidity. That balance between stylization and realism is what makes the painting feel both classical and modern at the same time.
This piece carries echoes of Baroque figure painting, especially in the way light hits the body, but it also looks back to early modern realists like Sargent in the handling of flesh. At the same time, the raw paint surface connects to Bay Area Figurative painters like Bischoff and Diebenkorn, who let brushwork remain visible as part of the story.
For me, Muscular Powerhouse is about capturing a commanding presence—something monumental but also very human. It can feel heroic, cinematic, or even mythological depending on the viewer’s perspective, which is part of its appeal.
