This print is from my painting Laocoön, a piece where I explored the male figure as both anatomy study and emotional expression. The figure twists forward, his back arched and muscles fully engaged, almost like a living sculpture. I wanted the viewer to feel the tension in the pose—the pull of the arms, the curve of the spine, the weight pressing down. It’s a pose that has roots in classical art, especially the ancient Greek Laocoön Group sculpture, which has always fascinated me for its intensity and drama.
I used bristle brushes and visible, directional strokes to emphasize form. Every muscle is shaped by both light and paint stroke, so the texture of the surface echoes the texture of the body. The palette is warm, with pinks and earth tones for the skin, set against a cooler gray-blue background built from blocky strokes. That balance of warm and cool, body and space, creates energy and keeps the eye moving across the composition.
Historically, this work is in conversation with Baroque and classical traditions. The strong use of chiaroscuro and dramatic anatomy definitely nods to Caravaggio and Rubens, while the brushwork connects more to modern figurative painters like Lucian Freud and Richard Diebenkorn, who weren’t afraid to let the paint remain visible as paint.
For me, Laocoön is about strength under strain, about capturing the body in a moment of exertion that’s also strangely beautiful. Viewers often tell me it feels cinematic—like a frozen frame that holds both movement and stillness at once.
Please note: this is a print, not an original. The prints are high-quality reproductions, but like any print, they don’t fully capture the depth and texture of the original painting. The larger the size, the more visible the brushwork and canvas texture will appear.
