This print is from my painting Invitation. I built this piece around the back view of a male figure, leaning forward in a pose that feels both grounded and intimate. The body is rendered with strong, visible brushstrokes that follow the muscles and curves of the form, giving the painting a sculptural quality. I kept the anatomy naturalistic but used stylization in the brushwork so the paint itself becomes part of the subject.
The background is a deep, textured field of blue. I used bristle brushes to drag thick strokes of color, almost patchwork in places, so it contrasts with the warmer flesh tones. That blue really pushes the figure forward, making the skin glow. I like how the cool and warm tones interact—there are hints of purples and greens in the shadows of the body that echo the energy of the background.
In terms of art history, this piece owes something to the Baroque painters, especially in the way the muscles are modeled through chiaroscuro, but also to modern figurative artists like Lucian Freud, who embraced texture and imperfection. There’s also a nod to Bay Area Figurative painting with its visible brushwork and balance between realism and abstraction.
For me, this painting is about intimacy and presence. Even though the figure’s face is hidden, the pose itself is expressive and evocative. It could suggest vulnerability, invitation, or quiet strength depending on how the viewer reads it. Some people see cinematic echoes here—like a frame from a film where the camera lingers on a body, turning it into both subject and landscape.
Please note: this is a print, not an original. The prints are high-quality reproductions, but like any print, they don’t fully capture the depth and texture of the original painting. The larger the size, the more visible the brushwork and canvas texture will appear.
