This print comes from my painting Gray Zone. It’s a portrait of a strong, silver-bearded man, and I really leaned into the textures and surfaces of both his body and the paint itself. The brushwork is thick and directional—broad strokes follow the muscles of the arm and chest, while tighter curls describe the hair and beard. I like how the strokes themselves echo the subject: powerful, weathered, but full of life.
The anatomy here is naturalistic, but I chose to stylize some areas with clear, visible strokes so the paint wouldn’t just disappear into realism. Instead, the painting celebrates both the figure and the medium—every plane of muscle is shaped by value and tone, but you can still see the hand of the painter in every mark. The palette is warm, using earth tones for the skin against a cool gray background, which makes the figure stand out with a kind of quiet monumentality.
Historically, I was thinking of the Baroque painters like Caravaggio who used chiaroscuro to create drama, but I was also influenced by more modern figurative artists like Lucian Freud and Richard Diebenkorn, who embraced the rawness of paint. The gray background, laid down with bold, blocky strokes, reminds me of fresco or unfinished walls—something timeless that holds the figure in place.
For me, this piece is about strength and dignity. Viewers often tell me it feels cinematic, like a close-up shot from a film where the subject is caught in a private, unguarded moment. It’s both intimate and monumental at the same time.
Please note: this is a print, not an original. The prints are high-quality reproductions, but like any print, they don’t fully capture the depth and surface of the original painting. The larger the size, the more visible the brushwork and canvas texture will appear.
