This print is from my painting Full Story at Eleven. In this piece, I really wanted to play with contrasts—not just in light and shadow, but in attitude and presence. On the left, the man in the blue suit is turned away, his face half in shadow, holding something back. On the right, the nude figure stands exposed, unapologetically direct, lit in a way that shows every plane of muscle and curve of form. The contrast between the tailored fabric and the vulnerable body creates tension, almost like a scene frozen out of cinema.

The brushwork here is loose but intentional—I used bristle brushes to layer paint so the surface feels textured, almost sculptural. The suit is painted with broad, gestural strokes, while the nude is handled with tighter, more nuanced modeling, emphasizing musculature through chiaroscuro. This kind of light-dark contrast, rooted in Baroque painting, has always been a touchstone for me, but here it’s filtered through a modern figurative lens.

Stylistically, you might see hints of John Singer Sargent in the way the cloth is handled, or even echoes of Diebenkorn in the expressive surfaces. But it’s also a continuation of a long tradition of figure painting where the human body is central—recalling everything from Caravaggio’s tenebrism to the bold figuration of the Bay Area painters.

What does it mean? For some viewers, it’s about desire, vulnerability, and power dynamics. For others, it might feel like a commentary on public vs. private selves—the suited figure as the mask, the nude as the truth beneath it. It’s a piece that carries drama and intimacy at the same time.

Please note: this is a print, not an original. The prints are high-quality reproductions, but like any print, they don’t fully capture the color depth and texture of the original painting. The larger the size, the more visible the brushwork and canvas texture will appear.
