This print is of my painting Boot Licker, a work where I leaned heavily into bold brushwork and exaggerated textures. I wanted the surface to feel raw and alive, so I used bristle brushes to build up thick strokes that show movement and energy. The composition highlights the physicality of the figures—the chain, the leather, the smoke—and all of these details create a kind of rhythm across the canvas. The close-up of the head and the downward tilt emphasize submission and intensity, while the background figure, with his cigarette and swirling smoke, adds an air of control and nonchalance.

Stylistically, I was inspired by painters like Rembrandt and Caravaggio, especially in the use of chiaroscuro and the way the shadows fall across the forms. But it also connects to the bold, expressive brushwork of the Bay Area Figurative painters like Bischoff and Diebenkorn. There’s a deliberate tension between realism and stylization here—the anatomy is naturalistic enough to feel human, but the brushstrokes are loose and almost abstract in places.

For me, this painting is about power, tension, and atmosphere. Viewers often tell me it reminds them of film noir photography or certain scenes in cinema where light and smoke become as important as the figures themselves. It’s meant to be both intense and beautiful, and I think the texture of the paint really drives that home.

Please note: this is a print, not an original. The prints are high-quality reproductions, but like any print, they don’t fully capture the color depth and texture of the original painting. The larger the size, the more visible the brushwork and canvas texture will appear.
