Early Release – Figurative Oil Painting, 16x20

This painting, Early Release, is part of my ongoing exploration of the male body as a site of texture, emotion, and painterly expression. I worked in oil on stretched canvas using thick, confident brushwork to emphasize the physical presence of the figure. The composition is cropped close, focusing on the torso and hands in a way that recalls Baroque painting—especially artists like Caravaggio and Ribera—where chiaroscuro dramatizes the form and suggests tactile realism.

My interest here wasn’t in making something photorealistic. Instead, I wanted the paint itself to feel alive. I used stiff bristle brushes, plastering knives, and even the handle of a brush to carve and draw into wet pigment, letting the texture become a kind of skin. The marks trace the direction of muscle and hair, giving a sense of motion and warmth. I built up the surface so that the light catches on the ridges of the paint, almost like light on flesh.

The palette uses warm earth tones—ochres, siennas, and reds—set against a high-chroma blue background that creates an electric contrast, giving the work immediacy and energy. This interplay of warm and cool hues heightens the tension between intimacy and distance, realism and abstraction.

I’ve always admired how painters like Rembrandt and Sargent could balance sensuality and structure in their depictions of the body. In my own work, I try to capture that same balance through bold, visible strokes that reveal the process of painting as much as the figure itself. The painting reflects my broader career focus on using traditional materials to make contemporary statements about identity, beauty, and the physical self.

The texture and brushwork make this piece striking in person—it has real depth and weight. Collectors who’ve seen my work in person often remark on how the paint surface feels sculptural.

Each of my paintings ships insured and packed by hand in a custom box. I take extra care in wrapping and securing each piece so it arrives safely. That’s why I ask for 3–4 weeks for shipping—it’s all done carefully, not rushed.
