Companions, 24x18 inches, crayon on paper, by Kenney Mencher
“Companions” 24 × 18 inches, Crayon on paper
This is a handmade, original work of art NOT A PRINT and NOT AI GENERATED
FREE SHIPPING Shipping takes 3–4 Weeks This ships from San Carlos, California (The San Francisco Bay Area). I use UPS and sometimes US Post.
I’m interested in portraying couples and companions, and in what relationships might mean as I get older. That includes long-term relationships, but possibly short-term ones too. This subject brings those questions together with my continuing affection for drawing handsome, bearish men. I’m still interested in their physical presence, but also in what an image of two people together can suggest.
Here, a larger standing man overlaps a seated man in a tank top. Their different sizes and positions give me a way to organize the drawing around two bodies sharing a room. The standing figure occupies much of the foreground, while the seated figure remains visible beside and behind him. Their closeness is part of the image, without spelling out the exact nature of their relationship.
The crayon lets me move between curved outlines and patches of darker shading. Marks follow the chest, belly, shoulders, and folds of the trousers, giving the bodies weight without smoothing every passage into a continuous tone. The pale tank top and areas of open paper contrast with the darker trousers and the hatching behind the figures.
The straighter lines of the room work against the curves of the bodies. Cropping the standing figure at the top and bottom keeps him from floating in the middle of the page, while the seated man’s bent leg and boot give the left side a different rhythm. I’m exploring companionship through those physical relationships as well as through the subject itself.
