Cal Sinclair 1993 – Leather Man Oil Portrait, 16x20” Thick Impasto Painting by Kenney Mencher
FREE SHIPPING
Shipping takes 3–4 Weeks
This is an original work not a print or a copy.
This is on stretched canvas with the edges wrapped so you won’t need to frame it.
Cal Sinclair 1993 started from a black-and-white photo in a 1990s issue of Honcho magazine. Cal Sinclair was one of the well-known faces in the leather scene, and I wanted to reinterpret that classic image through paint rather than photography. I cropped the reference photo and added color, atmosphere, and new details to make the composition more direct and engaging.
The paint on this piece is heavy and layered. I used a lot of bristle brush and plastering and palette knives to build texture across the surface. The color palette moves between warm skin tones and cool purples, which helps create a sense of volume and light. The contrast between the smooth areas and thick brushwork gives it a physical presence that’s important to me—paint that looks like paint but still describes a person.
I’m more interested in how paint behaves than in copying a photograph. This kind of approach connects to the way artists like Sargent or Bischoff used paint to suggest movement, light, and form rather than capture them literally. The thick strokes here follow the direction of the muscles, to indicate the structure of the body through the surface of the canvas.
When I ship a painting, I pack it myself using strong boxes and archival materials. Everything is insured and shipped carefully from my studio in Illinois.
