This painting is called Sleeper, and I painted it in 2010. It’s a small piece—just 12x12 inches—but it’s one of those little paintings that stuck with me in a big way. I loved it so much that it’s been hanging in my bedroom ever since I finished it—15 years now. It’s still there unless you decide it belongs in your collection.
It’s painted in thick, juicy impasto with bristle brushes, and the surface is super textured—lots of expressive brushwork that builds up the form and creates movement. It’s a return to my early love of the Bay Area Figurative style. You can see the influence of painters like Elmer Bischoff and Richard Diebenkorn in the way I built up the surface with rhythmic, confident strokes. It’s not just about describing anatomy or light—it’s about the gesture and emotion that comes through in how the paint sits on the canvas.
The figure is a young man asleep, curled into a relaxed pose, rendered with blocky, almost sculptural marks. There’s no photo-realism here—it’s stylized and direct, focused on the emotional vibe more than photographic accuracy. The colors are rich and layered, with purples and ochres in the skin and deep blues in the bedding. The pillow has these swirling whites and grays that almost dance across the surface. I was having a lot of fun pushing paint around and not worrying about perfection.
Even though it’s a small piece, it says a lot about where I was at that time in my career—coming back to expressive mark-making, trusting gesture, and trying to let the figure feel like it’s alive. It’s part of my Fresh Finds collection, which is made up of pieces I’ve pulled from storage and from my own walls. These are paintings that I’ve held onto for years, and I realized it was time to share them. They’re personal, and they’re part of my legacy—each one represents a moment in my growth as a painter.
