When I painted The Path to Paradise, I was exploring how to make something playful and suggestive without crossing into explicit territory — an image that hints more than it shows. I’ve always admired how photographers like Helmut Newton used light, texture, and gesture to create that kind of visual tension. This reproduction keeps that same sense of humor and sensuality, while letting the painting’s surface and brushwork show through in beautiful detail.
The original was painted in oil with contrasts in both color and texture. The background was built up using plastering knives to create a rough, almost architectural surface, while the skin was modeled more smoothly with bristle brushes following the direction of the muscles. I even scratched in the hair with the back of a brush and a pencil to add a tactile, graphic quality. Those layers translate vividly in this premium matte print — you can see the movement of the strokes and the play of light across the forms.
The palette balances warm flesh tones — pinks, oranges, and siennas — against a cool blue-gray backdrop. That temperature contrast gives the figure a sense of presence and dimensionality. The matte paper’s velvety, non-reflective finish captures the richness of these tones and keeps the focus on the painting’s surface.
