This piece is about the psychology of relationships. I think of it like a thematic apperception test—the kind psychologists use, where viewers bring their own stories and experiences into what they see. That’s exactly how many of my collectors describe living with my work: it sparks conversations with friends and guests about love, intimacy, and power dynamics.
The canvas shows two men side by side—one clothed, one nude. Their contrast suggests different sides of identity: what we show and what we keep hidden, strength and vulnerability, public and private selves. I used bold brushwork and strong contrasts of light and shadow to give it immediacy while keeping it open-ended.
For me, making work like this is also about visibility. Gay culture is often under pressure, but paintings like The Heart’s Filthy Lesson insist on presence.
