This is an original work not a print or a copy.

In Seated Nude Jock from Behind, I was trying to experiment with a drawing method used by Old Masters, where they would work on toned paper using black chalk and white highlights. Instead of chalk, I used watercolor and crayon—building shadows in layers of gray wash and then heightening the brightest parts of the back and spine with opaque white watercolor. I use crayon because it is sturdier and a bit more archival. (I don’t know how other artists ship drawings made with smudgy materials like chalk or charcoal.)

I was also studying anatomy in this piece. The spine, shoulder blades, and muscles of the back all create a rhythm of forms that move across the paper, and I wanted to understand how those shapes connect and turn in space. At the same time, I was trying not to make a perfectly balanced composition. I prefer when the weight of the image leans to one side—it feels more natural, and a bit more alive.

The process itself was about learning through looking. Using watercolor instead of chalk allowed me to create smoother tonal transitions while still keeping the layered look of a traditional study. The result is both a technical exercise and a finished drawing.

Each piece is shipped carefully packed, insured, and ready to frame.
