I painted "Rooftop" in 1996, right after I left my curator position at the University of Chicago and moved to Laredo, Texas to start a tenure-track job teaching art and art history. It was the first time I had a full-time teaching position and my first real studio space—a big, light-filled room where I could work more freely.
This piece is oil on stretched canvas, 18x14 inches, and it’s framed in a simple wood frame to 19x15 inches. The painting shows two figures on a rooftop against a city skyline. I was working from a reference photo and painted this in one sitting using an alla prima technique, meaning the paint was applied while still wet in a direct, layered way.
The woman in the red sweater is Valerie, and I’m the other figure. We were living in a new place and adjusting to a lot of changes. That feeling of distance—physical or emotional—was something I was trying to catch in this painting. It’s not dramatic, just a quiet moment with a lot under the surface.
The brushwork is loose but deliberate. You can see it especially in the buildings and clothing. The frame is vintage wood, and the painting is signed on the lower right. Like many of my early pieces, this is part of a collection I’ve been sorting through and offering now as a kind of legacy series—early work from my archives that’s been stored safely but never exhibited.
