Muscular Young Man in Blue Jeans with a Flower in His Pants, 8x10 inches watercolor on cotton paper by Kenney Mencher

The symbol of young men and flowers goes all the way back to the 16th century with the art of Baroque painter Caravaggio. The metaphor of a fresh flower was often symbolic of a you man's virginity and the freshness and beauty of his body. This watercolor of a young muscular twink is cropped to create an interesting composition by cropping the figure and working with the edges of the picture plane to create an asymmetrical and interesting composition. The cropping also is designed to create a sense of mystery and a chance for the viewer to invent a fantasy of who this beautiful boy is.

This work is painted by first sketching out the figure with a lithographic crayon and then applying successive layers of watercolor over the crayon to create shading and color.

The paper that this is painted on is called Rives BFK, which is a type of heavy cotton printmaking paper that won't degrade over time and should hold the color really well for at least fifty to one hundred years without fading, especially if this is framed behind glass.

I think I’m fulfilling the needs of an audience and group of people that appreciate the point of view I’m promoting. I also paint non-binary people, black people, and other people of color. I paint for these audiences because they are under-represented as subjects, and I feel like it’s a supportive thing to do, and also can be a politically powerful gesture. I actually think I was pandering more to straight men back when I was painting pin-up style women. I was really uncomfortable doing that, because it felt like I was perpetuating a system that degraded women.

If I really needed a justification for painting LGBTQ+ subjects, I would just point out that I have had some skin in the game. When I was young man, I had multiple same-sex partners, and today I’m still attacked by homophobes for being gay, even though they don’t know anything about me, or the complexities of my experience. On top of that, most of my friends, family, and social acquaintances are part of the LGBTQ+ community. In a way, I guess I’m painting more for those friends and family members than anyone else.

The size is a standard US frame size and can be framed inexpensively. Try buying a frame on the net.

Kenney’s pieces are even more amazing in person. The pictures offer a great reference but don’t do the detail of his work and brush strokes justice.

This painting came in the mail today and it is even better in person than the image on Etsy! The well-chosen colors, interesting and perfectly constructed composition, and the great use of brush strokes to define the musculature, all indicate that this painting was made by a master artist. I would be remiss, too, if I did not also thank him for his great service, quick shipping, and all the extras he sent along with the painting, itself. Thank you!

Great communication with the artist regarding the shipping process. When the package arrived I was very impressed with the care taken - the padding shows he values the work as much as I do. Surprised with the extras he slipped in the package - a watercolor study for the diptych, a program detailing his works and history, and several notecards (that will probably end up framed as well). I’m so happy to have found Mencher’s work.
