I painted this piece, Herringbone, in watercolor on paper in 2023. It’s an 8x10 inch original, not a reproduction. The work shows two male figures, cropped close, with strong attention to their torsos, faces, and the physical relationship between them. The background is patterned in a herringbone design, setting off the warm flesh tones with cool grays.
Watercolor is one of my favorite mediums because it allows me to work quickly and directly. The transparent washes let the paper breathe through, while the darker passages add structure and depth. The combination of loose brushwork and sharp contrasts gives this piece energy and immediacy.
For me, art like this is not just about depicting the male figure. It’s also about gay culture today—at a time when queer people and their art are often under attack or erased. Collecting and displaying gay art like this is a way of pushing back, of saying these images and identities belong in the world. Owning a piece like Herringbone isn’t just decoration; it’s a form of resistance, visibility, and solidarity.
As an artist, I’ve been painting men for decades, drawing from both classical traditions and contemporary queer life. My work has been collected widely, and I’ve always tried to make it accessible. I believe paintings like this carry both personal meaning for me and social meaning in the broader fight for equality and representation.
