Title:
Grounded in Geometry – Crayon Figure Drawing with Patterned Background
Grounded in Geometry is exactly what it sounds like—a figure anchored not just in space but in shape. The pose is a classic squat, but from a rear view that emphasizes balance, rhythm, and musculature. I worked in crayon over a patterned wash on Rives BFK, using a stencil I designed to echo tile or circuit-like geometry. The background flattens the space just enough to make the figure feel more sculptural, almost like it’s carved out from the foreground.
This piece is all about line and weight. The verticals of the spine and the arcs of the glutes and shoulders form a central axis, while the cross-hatching and stroke direction add energy. I kept the palette grayscale—no color—so I could really focus on the values and the contrast between light and dark. The surface has a slight tooth that let me build up texture with repeated strokes, especially across the back and thighs.
The strongest areas of emphasis here are the curve of the back, the flexed glutes, and the bent legs. There's a visual rhythm in the musculature that feels both classical and stylized. The squat pose also brings in a grounded quality that’s a little primal and a little athletic—like something out of a preparatory sketch by Michelangelo or a superhero turnaround sheet.
It’s not about perfection—it’s about structure and strength. This piece might make someone think of movement, power, or even calm. It connects to my broader exploration of the body as architecture and how figures can exist not just in narrative space but in formal, designed space too.
