These two paintings are deeply personal to me. I call them Greeny in My Dream and they come as a set. I painted them in 2020 after I had a vivid, emotional dream about my high school painting teacher, Irwin “Greeny” Greenberg.
In the dream, I was lying in bed in a dark room when I noticed Greeny standing in the doorway, framed in this bright halo of light. He laughed and asked, “Why aren’t you painting?” I said, “I don’t have enough supplies.” That’s when the dream turned surreal—his left glass eye sparkled like a special effect from the movie Cocoon. He laughed again and tossed a shopping bag into the light. Out spilled tubes of paint, brushes, and raw canvas. As he turned to leave, he paused, cocked his head, and asked, “How come you’re still not painting?” I answered, “I don’t have the money to buy the time.” He chuckled and tossed another bag. This one burst open, full of cash.
I woke up crying.
I knew I had to paint it. These works are an attempt to document the dream and the gratitude I feel for Greeny’s encouragement—even years after he passed. I composed the scenes from memory, imagination, and some old photos of both of us from back in the day. The use of black and white with a touch of orange in the paint gives the whole thing a vintage, dreamlike tone, like an old photo developing in a darkroom.
Each piece was painted in oil on canvas pad paper. They’re 18x24 inches and do have some slight buckling and a faint crease or two—especially at the edges. Please look closely at the images. I didn’t correct or stretch them because I wanted the surfaces to stay raw and honest. I think the imperfections give the works even more character.
This diptych feels like part tribute, part exorcism, and definitely a creative reawakening. They were the first things I painted after that dream—and they got me working again.
