This is an original work not a print or a copy.
I drew Boxing Gray Bear as part of my ongoing exploration of how line, shadow, and gesture express strength and vulnerability. I’ve always been drawn to older, muscular figures—their faces and bodies tell stories of endurance and pride. Here, the figure of a boxer becomes almost classical: defiant, poised, and sculptural, but also very human.
I worked this piece with my usual experimental approach to materials. Using black lithographic crayon on thick Rives BFK paper, I built form through tight hatching and broad sweeps of tone. The direction of each mark traces the muscle planes and the tension in the pose. The play of light and dark—what artists call chiaroscuro—is something I’ve studied and used for decades. It creates depth and emotion, and gives the illusion that the drawing has a pulse under the skin.
The image recalls Baroque sculptors like Bernini and painters such as Caravaggio, where light defines character and motion. It also connects to 20th-century realists like Robert Henri and Fairfield Porter—artists who found nobility in ordinary strength. In that sense, this piece ties to my lifelong interest in depicting the heroic in everyday people, something that runs through my painting and drawing career.
I don’t try to make my drawings photorealistic; I want the marks themselves to be visible—evidence of thought and touch. The rough texture of Rives BFK gives the drawing a tactile presence, like flesh and fabric under pressure. The crayon is permanent and archival; it won’t smear during shipping or handling.
When I pack and ship my work, I take it seriously. Every piece is carefully wrapped in archival materials and reinforced with sturdy cardboard and foam. I insure all shipments and personally handle every step so that your artwork arrives in perfect condition.
