I made Avoidance in 1994 during my final year in the MFA program at the University of Cincinnati. It’s a reduction woodcut, which means I carved the same wood block in layers—removing more of the surface after each color run. That process destroys the block as you go, so only a limited number of prints can ever be made. This one is print 4 out of a total edition of 8.
The image came from a film still, and I used a preliminary drawing to plan it out. Each print was hand-pulled, so they each have small differences. The paper on this one is in great shape overall, but the upper left corner has a little bit of buckling—nothing that affects the image area, and it should flatten out easily when framed.
