This drawing is called Giggles in the Photobooth, and it’s one of those pieces that came out of pure serendipity. It was part of my Renovated Reputations project, which was probably one of the most joyful, collaborative, and successful runs of shows I’ve ever done. This image came from a long strip of photo booth pictures taken during the reception at ArtHaus Gallery in San Francisco. I had rented a photo booth for the show so people could take portraits in vintage costumes, and after the event I received a full digital printout of all the photos that had been taken.
I didn’t know who this mother and daughter were, but they were at the show, and I remember noticing them a few times throughout the evening. The way they moved together—the warmth between them—made an impression on me. So when I saw this moment captured in the photo booth shots, I had to draw it. The little girl’s face is scrunched up in a laugh, and the mother looks like she’s in mid-sentence or mid-laugh herself. It’s a joyful, intimate moment that felt honest and affectionate.
The drawing is 8x10 inches, pencil on paper. The shading is soft and natural, with careful line work and texturing. I tried to capture that immediate, spontaneous feel that the photo had, without over-rendering it. It’s a snapshot in pencil—a tribute to the energy and community that came out of those Renovated Reputations exhibitions.
Those shows were more than just me putting paintings on walls. They were packed—300 to 500 people at each event—many dressed up in 1930s or mid-century outfits. We handed out newspaper-style catalogs full of short fiction written by contributors who used my portraits as story prompts. It felt like a living art project: a mix of installation, literature, photography, and drawing. And this piece is a perfect reminder of that time—one of those unexpected treasures from a collaborative night of art and community.
It’s part of my Fresh Finds series, where I’m digging into my archive and sharing works that have been sitting in flat files or storage for years. These pieces are part of my personal and professional story, and I thought it was time to make them available to collectors.
