This ships from Round Lake Beach, Illinois. A suburb outside of Chicago. I use UPS and sometimes US Post.
This painting is titled "Candy Striper." I painted it in 2002, and it's 20x20 inches, oil on wood, framed (the frame brings it to about 20.5x20.5 inches). It’s been part of my personal archive ever since, and I’m releasing it now as part of my Fresh Finds project.
I based this painting loosely on vintage imagery and ideas around caregiving and power dynamics. The young woman in a nurse's uniform is standing just behind an older man whose expression is more detached and confident. There’s something ambiguous going on—are they connected? Is she helping him? Judging him? I leave that open.
The brushwork is expressive and directional. The color palette leans warm, contrasted against a very dark, almost black background. The composition is asymmetrical but balanced—your eye moves from the nurse’s pale uniform and blonde hair to the man’s soft but slightly smug expression. I used a shallow space with minimal background detail to keep the focus tightly on the two figures.
The style is rooted in Bay Area Figurative influences. There’s a focus on gesture and psychological nuance, not just literal realism. The figures are painted from the waist up, close to the viewer, using subtle non-local color.
