This ships from Round Lake Beach, Illinois. A suburb outside of Chicago. I use UPS and sometimes US Post.
This piece is called "As You Like It." I painted it in 1998, and it’s watercolor on paper, roughly 8x10 inches. It’s part of my Fresh Finds project—where I’m pulling older works out of flat files and storage and offering them up to collectors for the first time.
It’s a loose, expressive watercolor sketch showing two men in conversation—one gesturing mid-sentence, the other listening. You can feel the moment unfolding. This kind of work is more about the gesture and emotion than the detail. I used a limited palette of warm ochres, sepia, and washes of gray.
I often start these watercolors with a rough rectangle drawn to frame the composition. You can see the organic edge of the sketch and how it floats on the page—something you can either crop with a mat or leave visible if you want to show that it’s a working piece.
The figures are simplified and fluid, the hands and facial expressions rendered with a few bold marks. The space behind them is blocked in with darker tones, pushing them forward. It’s not heavily detailed—this was about capturing mood and body language.
This piece was made during a time when I was experimenting with how to convey narrative through subtle cues. I was also thinking a lot about theater and identity—hence the Shakespearean title.
I’ve always believed drawings and watercolors like this help tell the fuller story of my work. Gallery directors used to ask for them specifically, knowing collectors wanted to see the process and thinking behind the oil paintings. That’s why I’ve kept them. And now I’m offering them again.
