This painting is called "Valerie in a Suit." I painted it in 1999, and it’s 9x10 inches, oil on wood, framed in a wide black wooden frame that brings it to about 13x14 inches total. It’s part of my Fresh Finds series, where I’m digging through my flat files and studio racks to release pieces from earlier in my career that haven’t been offered before.
This is a quiet, moody portrait of my friend Val. She’s wearing a man’s pinstripe jacket, and the pose is introspective—eyes downcast, softly illuminated from the side with warm yellow and red tones against a dark, nearly black background. The light falls across her face and collarbone, highlighting the form while leaving much of the detail in shadow. It’s loosely painted with strong directional brushwork and thickly applied passages in the face and jacket.
The style sits somewhere between naturalistic and stylized. The anatomy is pretty accurate, but I was clearly working with light and color more than exact detail. There’s very little background—just a dark neutral field—which throws the focus completely on the figure. The brushwork is loose but considered, especially in how the face emerges from shadow. There’s almost a chiaroscuro effect in how I handled the value contrast.
Compositionally, the tilt of Val’s head and the angles of the suit jacket create asymmetry and visual rhythm. The black frame emphasizes the intimacy of the portrait and makes it feel like you’re looking into a quiet moment.
